PAUL GOLDSTEIN, BA., CFP, CLU, CH.F.C., TEP
Paul Goldstein has held a distinguished record of service in the financial planning industry for 46 years. Paul is a Canadian national expert on estate and retirement planning.
Born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1932, Paul immigrated to Canada in 1954. In 1958, he received his BA (Hons.) in Economics and Political Science from Sir George Williams University in Montreal and did post-graduate work in the same fields at McGill and Carleton University. After 10 years of employment in the manufacturing industry, Paul began his financial planning career. Prior to founding Paul Goldstein Financial Services Inc., Paul served in a managerial capacity with the New York Life Insurance Company and the Commercial Union Assurance Company, in Toronto and Montreal.
Paul received certification as a Chartered Life Underwriter in 1974 and as a Chartered Financial Consultant in 1989 and is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Paul is a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) and of the Top of the Table. He has been a MDRT qualifier for the last 41 years and a 34 year qualifying member of the Top of the Table. In his book the 21st Century Agent, Dan Sullivan included Paul Goldstein in his list of 8 role models for the 21st Century Agent.
Paul is a member of the Conference for Advanced Life Underwriting (CALU), the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), the Canadian Tax Foundation and the Estate Planning Council of Toronto.
In 1974, Paul was commissioned by The Life Underwriter’s Association of Canada (LUATC) to prepare and revise qualifying examinations for Canadian life insurance agents. In 1976, he was appointed a member of the Continuous Education Committee of LUATC, and in 1977 he was appointed chairman of the LUATC Special Committee of the Educational Council.
Paul was the author of “The Income and Estate Funding Report”, a monthly newsletter published by McMillan Publishers, from 1981 to 1984. He contributed to McGraw Hill Ryerson’s annual publication “Are You Paying Too Much Tax?” for 15 years. Paul has also written for the CCH Tax Works newsletter, “The Financial Planner.”
In 1983, Gage Publishing Limited printed 100,000 copies of Paul’s research paper on the impact of inflation on the financial security of the average Canadian. Subsequently, the Life Underwriter’s Association of Canada, with permission from the publisher, made Paul’s paper part of the Personal Financial Planning course of the Institute of Chartered Life Underwriters.
In 1997, Paul created and developed G.E.M.® (Guaranteed Estate Multiplier), a financial instrument based on concepts that had never been used before and that made possible guaranteed returns for estate and income purposes that could not and still cannot be matched by any other guaranteed investment.
Paul has been a sought-after main platform speaker at national and international conferences of financial professionals, including the 2002 National Conference of CAIFA (now Advocis), the 2003 Top of the Table meeting in Rancho Mirage, California, the World Conference on Critical Illness in Victoria, B.C. in January 2004 and the Manulife Partners In Progress Conference in Kananaskis, Alberta in October 2004.
On January 28, 2010, in the wake of the widespread concerns caused by the economic crisis which started in 2008, Paul gave an exceptionally well received lecture at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, on the effectiveness of the regulatory system governing the Canadian life insurance industry. Paul’s report, entitled “How Secure are Canadian Life Insurance Policies?” was published in the June 2010 issue of Forum, the national magazine for financial advisors.
On October 20, 2011, Paul was the keynote speaker at The Toronto Chapter of The Financial Advisors Association of Canada 2011 Wrap up event. By sharing his motivational story as to how he overcame unimaginable hardships and obstacles to reach the top, Paul has inspired many people how to deal successfully with their own challenges.
Paul gave a presentation entitled "The Truth about Annuities" to the Estate Planning Council of Toronto, on November 13, 2012 and to the Sun Life National Sales Conference on January 9, 2013.
